Do I need both SEO and AEO?

For most brands, yes. SEO and AEO overlap by roughly 70 percent on technical foundations (schema, internal linking, content quality, site speed) but target different surfaces. SEO drives Google clicks. AEO drives AI engine citations. Both matter because users now research across both surfaces. Running them under a single combined retainer compounds the foundation work.

Why split retainers are wasteful

Most brands hire one SEO agency and one AEO agency. Both ship schema, both write content, both work on internal linking. The brand pays twice for the same foundation work. A combined retainer eliminates the duplication.

When SEO-only is enough

Almost never. AEO performance is strongly correlated with traditional Google ranking. Brands with weak Google rankings struggle to win AI citations because the AI engines pull from the broader Google index. Both disciplines feed each other.
